Faculty Lecture
“Disentangling Empathy: Opposing Contributions of Different Facets of Empathy to Interpersonal Accuracy” with Associate Professor of Psychology Jeremy Cone
What is it that provides us an accurate window into the thoughts and feelings of others? Recent research has suggested that different facets of empathy—emotional contagion, on the one hand, and empathic concern, on the other—are psychologically distinct and result in different behavioral tendencies. In this talk, Prof. Jeremy Cone will discuss how disentangling empathy in this way can help to provide a more nuanced understanding about how the strategies we use to step into the emotional shoes of others can make different contributions to our ability to accurately envision others’ inner emotional lives.
