Reflections on Broughton Castle

Nothing like chatting with the beautiful 90-year-old woman in the garden deadheading roses into a paper shopping bag only to find out that she used to be the owner of the castle before moving out to “smaller accommodations” nearby and handing it over to her son.

The gnawing question remains: were the garden borders and parterre more beautiful on the ground level when one was surrounded by them or viewing them from the slate rooftop where you could see the garden plan defined and come alive with the river, grazing sheep and Cotswold countryside in the picture-perfect background?
